If you are like me, you too have hesitated on creating your own Bucket List, and maybe for the same reasons. Who wants to think of dying and death, especially your own death. Another reason may possibly be that, most bucket lists we have gotten used to seeing are packed full of things we may actually never be able to do, either because it’s scary or, we just can’t afford to hop a plane to Italy to ride on a gondola.

One thing I have noticed in regard to most lists is the fact that they mainly focus on these big adventures and rarely on leaving something behind. So, for those who are in the same boat as I, (a john boat without a paddle, NOT a gondola) I have decided to take a new approach to the big Bucket. How about we focus not on creating an un-achievable list of the outrageous, daring and sometimes just plain crazy and instead create something beautiful to leave behind for those we love?

A thing of beauty is a joy forever…
From John Keats‘ epic poem, Endymion, 1818:

A thing of beauty is a joy for ever:
Its loveliness increases; it will never
Pass into nothingness; but still will keep
A bower quiet for us, and a sleep
Full of sweet dreams, and health, and quiet breathing.

So with this in mind, here is my Top Ten List of Super Simple Ways to Create Something Beautiful to Leave Behind Before You Die … whew, that’s a mouthful! I promise, the list is easier than saying that three times fast! Here it is…

  1. Write a song or poem.
  2. Start a tradition.
  3. Plant a tree.
  4. Make a time capsule.
  5. Make a scrapbook.
  6. Teach someone something.
  7. Mentor someone. (Big Brother/Big Sister)
  8. Donate blood.
  9. Give to a charity. (Or start one!)
  10. Build something to leave your children. (dollhouse, tree house)

Now, as you can see these are all really easy and wonderful ways to create something beautiful, feel accomplished and all the while you are leaving something behind that actually means something to someone. Sure beats jumping out of an airplane at 20,000 feet!

I hope you will complete at least ONE item on the list and share it with me, and if you have ideas for additions to this list, please let me know! Just remember… the point is to keep it simple and make sure it follows the purpose of leaving your mark. Enjoy!
